
Rice Digs Deep in 3-2 Win over Long Island

Manhattan, Kan. – The Rice Volleyball team pulled out a tough 3-2 (21-25, 25-13, 25-19, 14-25, 15-12) win over Long Island, Friday afternoon in its opener of the K-State Invitational at Morgan Family Arena.
The Owls (5-4) had a .186 hitting percentage while LIU (1-12) hit .174. Junior right side hitter Lola Foord led Rice with a career-high 17 kills while hitting .395. Senior outside hitter Danyle Courtley had 16 kills.
Senior outside hitter Sahara Maruska recorded her first double-double of the year with 10 kills and 12 digs. Senior setter Izzy Rawlings had her second double-double with career-highs of 47 assists and 18 digs.
Defensively, the Owls were led by senior libero Nia McCardell with 33 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Darby Harris also had a career-high 21 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
Long Island took the first set, 25-21. Rice opened a 5-3 lead, but a 7-3 run by LIU gave it its first lead at 10-7. Rice tied it at 15, but the Sharks scored six of the next eight points to take its largest lead of the match, 21-17. The teams traded points the rest of the way. Foord (.500 hitting) and freshman outside hitter Cindy Tchouangwa led the Owls with four kills.
Second Set
Rice bounced back, taking the second set, 25-13. The Owls scored the first five points in the set and extended its lead to 9-2. Long Island scored six of the next eight points to cut the deficit to three, but Rice closed the set on a 14-5 run, including the final seven points. Foord hit .571 in the set (4 kills) and Maruska hit .300 (4 kills).
Third Set
The teams played a back-and-forth set before Rice took control and won, 25-19. The Sharks held the lead at the start before four straight points gave Rice a 12-9 advantage. A 6-2 run gave LIU a 15-14 lead, but Rice answered with its own 6-2 run. LIU cut it to 20-19, but Rice closed it out with five straight points. Courtley led the way with eight kills (.429 hitting) and Foord added four.
Fourth Set
Long Island jumped out early and never let up in a 25-14 victory. LIU went up 9-4, then extended its lead to 17-6. Rice was able to pull within eight, but could get not closer. Rice as held to a -.049 hitting percentage and Long Island hit .342.
Fifth Set
Rice had to battle back from an early deficit to win, 15-12. LIU again got out to an early lead, this time taking a 6-2 advantage. But the Owls went on an 8-1 run to grab a 10-7 advantage. Long Island pulled within one (11-10) but Rice managed to score four of the next six points to take the set and the match. Foord (1.000) and graduate student right side hitter Emilia Weske (.273) led all players with four kills.

Rice concludes the K-State Invitational tomorrow, September 16, when it faces hosts Kansas State. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. and will be streamed by ESPN+.
