
No. 18 Rice Drops Decision at No. 16 Baylor

Waco, Texas – No. 18 Rice saw its comeback attempt come up short, falling at No. 16 Baylor, 3-1 (25-13, 25-14, 24-26, 25-23), Friday night at the Ferrell Center.
The Owls were outhit, .162-to-.007. Senior outside hitter Danyle Courtley led the Owls offensively with a match-best 16 kills, hitting a team-high .314, while graduate student right side hitter Emilia Weske added five kills.
Junior setter Izzy Rawlings recorded a career-high 29 assists and senior libero Nia McCardell led all players with a season-high 21 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
Baylor took the opening set, 25-13. Rice came out strong, jumping out to an 8-5 lead. But, the Bears went on a 14-1 run to take a 19-9 advantage. The teams traded points the rest of the way.
Second Set
Baylor took an early 5-1 lead on its way to a 25-14 second set win. The Owls got within three at 13-10. But with the Bears holding a 15-11 lead, they scored five straight points on their way to closing the set on a 10-3 run.
Third Set
Rice turned the page in the third set, outlasting Baylor, 26-24. The Owls came out on fire, scoring the first seven points. Baylor cut the deficit to four before Rice extended its lead to 18-9. Rice took a commanding 22-13 advantage. However, the Bears got going with an 11-2 run to tie the set at 24. But, kills by Courtley and Weske gave the Owls the set. Courtley had seven kills while hitting .417 in the set.
Fourth Set
The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair as Rice dropped a tough 25-23 decision. Baylor jumped out to a 9-6 lead, but the Owls scored seven of eight points to take a 13-10 advantage. With the set tied at 17, the Bears went on a 7-3 run, taking a 24-20 lead. Rice fended off three straight match points, closing within one, but Baylor closed out the victory. Courtley hit .333 with a set-high six kills.

Rice begins a three-match homestand next Tuesday, Sept. 5, when it welcomes No. 2 Stanford to Tudor Fieldhouse. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be streamed at ESPN+.
