Over 300% increase in donors
A total of 623 donors contributed $153, 132 in support of Rice Athletics student-athletes on Rice University's Day of Giving, which was held on April 4. The gifts to the Owl Club Athletic Fund represented a nearly four-fold increase from last year's total and ranks as the second-highest number of gifts received during the annual event and the 365% increase in donors was the largest for any Rice University funds on the Day of Giving.
"What a tremendous day for our athletic department as we were able to reach giving levels for the Owl Club that we haven't seen in quite some time," said Rice Director of Athletics, Recreation, and Lifetime Fitness Joe Karlgaard. "The results are a testament to our donors' belief in our student-athletes, and I'm humbled by the full participation of our entire athletic staff as well. I want to thank everyone involved from Rice Athletics and Rice University who helped make this day such a success."
"I am very blessed and fortunate to be here at Rice University which is a phenomenal school with the best student-athletes and passionate supporters. I don't think it was a coincidence that we had such an outstanding day for our Owl Club," said Ryan Hall, Associate Athletic Director of Development. "We have significant momentum with the success of our programs and our impending move into the American Athletic Conference, July 1st."
The successful day of giving included the athletic department reaching 100% staff participation in supporting the Owl Club.
"That right there shows how much this department loves our world-class student-athletes and Rice University as a whole," Hall stated. "We had all the support we could ask for from senior administration, coaches, staff members, all the way down to several student-athletes who made the decision to donate."
This year's effort was enhanced by several initiatives throughout the day designed to encourage giving, highlighted by a series of videos featuring current student-athletes released after certain levels of support were achieved. The was also bolstered by three generous matching gifts of $10,000 each from Walt Greenberg, Gary Chiles & Amy Sutton, and an anonymous donor.
"We are fortunate to have such a hardworking and dedicated development team and be a part of such a dynamic department," Hall noted. "I am very proud of all my team's efforts and appreciate the support we received from so many supporters far and wide. Small and mighty, this could not have been done without them: Rice Fight Never Dies!"
