Owls Down Islanders in Straight Sets

Rice hosts Texas Tech on Sunday at 2 p.m.
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls volleyball team continued their winning ways with a convincing 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse on day two of the Adidas Invitational I.
Rice (7-1) never trailed in the match and held their opponents below a .200 hitting percentage (.139) for the seventh time this season. The Owls hit .337 as a collective unit with senior right side Ellie Bichelmeyer leading the way with a match-high 11 kills on 17 attacks (.647).
The Owls totaled 7.0 team blocks and took advantage of 21 Islander errors. Junior libero Nia McCardell led all players with 13 digs while junior outside hitter Sahara Maruska added 11 digs.

"This was another pretty clean performance today. I was happy with the focus and adjustment to A&M-Corpus Christi's fast style of play. We will need to rest up for an exciting match up tomorrow with a strong Texas Tech squad. We are hoping to pack Tudor!"
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
The Islanders (0-10) gave the Owls a fight in the opening frame but Rice used a 6-3 run late to win 25-20. Six different Owls recorded a kill in the game, led by four kills from Bichelmeyer. Graham recorded 10 assists in the frame while freshman Darby Harris totaled seven digs.
Second Set
Rice hit .387 on their way to a 25-17 victory to take control of the match. Bichelmeyer chipped in three more kills and the Owls made life hard on the Islanders at the net with 4.0 team blocks and took complete advantage on nine Texas A&M-Corpus Christi attack errors.
Third Set
Bichelmeyer and Danyle Courtley each contributed four kills in the final contest while defensively the Owls limited the Islanders to only nine kills. Rice picked up four service aces in the game, led by a pair from freshman Gaby Mansfield.
