McCardell Chosen as C-USA Defensive Player of Week

DALLAS – Following a weekend in which the Rice Owls volleyball team started the season 3-0, junior libero Nia McCardell was recognized as the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week per league announcement on Monday.
McCardell, a native of Missouri City, Texas (Ridge Point HS), anchored the back line of the Rice defense by accumulating 46 digs across 11 sets as the Owls defeated Houston, Samford, and host LSU to win the Tiger Classic crown.
The junior averaged 4.18 digs per set and post double-figure digs in each of the three victories. After 12 digs in each of Rice's first two wins, McCardell collected a team-high 22 digs in the Owls five-set thrilling victory against the Tigers. In addition, McCardell totaled a team-best six service aces over the weekend.
The C-USA weekly honor is the first of McCardell's career. Rice (3-0), who is receiving votes in the AVCA Preseason Top-25 Poll, will next be in action this upcoming weekend at the Oregon Invitational, facing UC Davis (3-0) on Friday, Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. CT, followed by a showdown versus Oregon on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. CT.
