Huang Named C-USA Top Freshman

17-5 record in first year of college tennis
Haoyuan Huang, who quickly became a fixture after joining the lineup for the spring season, has been named the 2022 Conference USA Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year in voting by conference coaches.
Huang, who was also named to the All-Conference USA singles first team, delayed his enrollment from the fall until January and went on to lead the Owls with a 17-5 record in singles. He was 13-3 at the first line, the best mark at the top position in the lineup by a Rice freshman since former All-American Richard Barker was 15-8 in 2001. Two of his three losses at the first line were extended to three sets and he was 6-2 in three-set matches while leading in third sets of two others when they were abandoned. He was 2-1 in C-USA regular-season action and 1-0 at C-USA Championship. His three-set win at UTSA evened the score at 2-2, setting the stage for a 4-2 win.
Huang joins Barker (2001), Robert Searle (2003), and Jake Hansen (2016) as Owls to be named the conference's top freshman. Barker and Searle were both honored by the WAC.
