Destiny Jackson Named C-USA Player of the Week

DALLAS, TEXAS – After dropping a career-high 33 points in Rice's 91-88 double-overtime win against Houston, senior guard Destiny Jackson was selected as the Conference USA Player of the Week the league announced Monday afternoon.
"What we were able to witness with DJ's game on Saturday afternoon in the double OT win vs Houston was something so incredibly special," said head coach Lindsay Edmonds. "She completely took over the game in a very efficient and effective way. She truly is the heartbeat to our team and her growth over the last year has been so tremendous. DJ is so deserving of this honor and I am beyond happy for her for this recognition."
Jackson's 33-point performance is the most points scored by an Owl this season and nearly doubles her previous career high of 18 points, scored at LA Tech on Feb. 24, 2022. The 33 points came on an incredible 12-of-14 shooting from the floor while going 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Jackson also added seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Trailing by 12 early in the third quarter, Jackson ignited a second-half comeback against the Cougars with the Owls battling all the way back before eventually prevailing in double overtime. Jackson dropped 24 points in the second half and two overtimes combined while keeping Rice's perfect season intact.
Jackson is averaging 14.1 points per game while shooting 60.7% from the floor and 86.5% from the free throw line. Jackson has also reached double-digit points in seven of Rice's eight games and has a team-high 26 assists this season and is second on the team with 11 steals.
Rice (8-0) is off to the best start in program history and is one of 12 teams in the nation still undefeated. The Owls are receiving votes in both the AP and USA Today/WBCA Polls. Rice will take on Sam Houston on Friday at 11:15 a.m. to wrap up nonconference play.
