HOUSTON – Fresh off yet another successful season, the Rice Volleyball team was fitted recently with a state of the art team lounge located directly off their practice floor in the West Gymnasium within Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Cunningham Family Volleyball Lounge features the Robert A. Schlanger ('73) Nutrition Center, the Wade and Mert Adams Study Center, and the Judy Allen ('61) Film Review Theatre.
In total, there were 35 gracious donors who contributed over $200,000 to the project.
In addition, the Owls will soon have a new Taraflex floor installed on top of the practice court in the West Gym through the company Vector Concepts thanks to the generosity of lead donors Steve ('84) and Leticia ('86) Trauber and Melissa ('06, '00) and Steve Kean. The court will be renamed Trauber Court.
Taraflex Sport M+ is the same product used by the Olympic Volleyball team and has been used since 1976. Taraflex® is widely used by the top NCAA Division I volleyball players and coaches. It is the most widely specified sports surface in the world and has been selected for 10 consecutive Olympic Games.

"We are extremely proud of our upgrades to the Rice volleyball facilities," head coach Genny Volpe said. "Our program has made tremendous strides over the last few years and the support that we have been receiving from not only the athletic administration but also our generous and loyal supporters has been truly amazing. Rice volleyball will constantly look to improve and recruit the best and the brightest around the country and these facilities definitely help, not only in recruiting but also to give our players in the program the best opportunities to succeed on and off the court."
No. 23 ranked Rice is coming off a season in which they earned their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance and finished the season ranked No. 23 in the AVCA Top-25 Poll. They bring back 14 letterwinners, including six starters and open the season Aug. 27 at the South Carolina Classic facing No. 9 Pittsburgh.
