Tokyo the goal for Lettenberger
Rice sophomore Ahalya Lettenberger's quest to earn a trip to the Paralympic Games in Tokyo later this summer opens on Thursday when she competes in the first of four events at the U.S. Paralympic Swimming Team Trials in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Lettenberger will compete in the 100 meter backstroke on Thursday, the 100 and 400 meter freestyle on Saturday and the 200 meter individual medley on Sunday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center at the University of Minnesota.
Preliminaries begin at 9 a.m. (central) each morning with the finals session beginning at 5 p.m.
Paralympic Swimming Trials Schedule
The entire meet will be live streamed at no charge across NBC's three platforms (Peacock, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app.)
Lettenberger represented the United States in the 2019 Paralympic World Championships in London. She qualified for the finals in five events and won the silver medal in the 400 freestyle.
Unlike the Olympic trials, the winners at the Paralympic trials will not automatically earn spots in Tokyo. At the conclusion of the event, a committee will decide which athletes are best suited to earn the quota spots the U.S. has been allocated.
