
Hall of Fame Nominations Now Open

2021 class to be inducted this fall
The nomination period for the Rice Athletics Hall of Fame Class of '21 is now underway and Owls fans are encouraged to lend their voices to the selection process.
Fans can nominate their favorite Owls for not only consideration for induction into the Hall of Fame based off of their athletic accomplishments, but also for the Distinguished "R" and Honorary "R" awards which are also presented during the ceremonies held in the fall every other year. The nomination period will close on March 31 with the announcement of the Class of '21 set for later this summer in advance of Hall of Fame weekend that coincides with a Rice home football game.
Founded in 1970 by the "R" Association, the Rice Athletics Hall of Fame currently honors 215 student-athletes, coaches, teams, and trainers for their careers on South Main.
As set forth by the "R" Association, the criteria for induction states that to be eligible, a candidate "must possess or shall have possessed, in addition to outstanding ability in sports, other qualifications such as sportsmanship, character and integrity, and be one who has brought great distinction to Rice University; and shall have completed his or her athletic eligibility or service with the Athletic Department or Rice University at least five years prior to his or her selection".
The Distinguished "R" Award was established in 1969 by the "R" Association to recognize past letter winners who have led an exemplary life. The Honorary "R" Award was created in 1974 to recognize individuals who need not have competed for or attended Rice, but have been long-standing supporters of Rice Athletics.
The most recent inductees were honored in 2019 and featured the members of the 1994 SWC Women's Cross Country Championship team was inducted along with Matt Anderson '98 (baseball), Earl Cooper '81 (football), Lauren Neaves '06 (women's basketball) and Rebeca Pazo '05 (volleyball) in addition to former men's tennis coach Ron Smarr.
