12/4/2021 5:44:00 PM | Swimming & Diving
Personal bests and top time in C-USA in the 200
In Brief: Zoe Spitz raced to personal bests while capturing both backstroke events and posted the top time in C-USA in the 200 back, while Marta Cano-Minarro and Arielle Hayon added individual wins for the Owls in a 159-102 dual meet loss to Texas A&M on Saturday at the Rice Competition Pool.
The Details: Spitz knocked nearly a second off her previous best in the 100 backstroke, breaking the 54-second mark and finishing in 53.96. In the 200 back, she touched the wall in a conference-leading 1:57.41, bettering her previous best of 1:58.30. Cano surged into the lead over the final 50 yards to capture the 200 freestyle in 1:47.65 while Hayon bested the field in the 100 fly in 55.39. Spitz and Cano joined with Lauren McDougall and Becca Evans to close out the afternoon on a winning note, capturing the 200 free relay in 1:33.55. Hayon added a second-place finish in the 200 fly and Sydney Morgan led a 2-3-4-5 finish for Rice in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.58.
Seth Huston: "It is good to have classes behind us. Despite the rigors of the end of the semester, the team had great meet day attitudes and raced very well today. It was exciting to watch Marta come from behind in the 200 free and Zoe swam great backstroke races start to finish. Freshman Arielle Hayon led the 100 fly start to finish and had some great turns to create a lead."
Up Next: The Owls will turn their immediate attention to the start of final exams this week and then take a short break for the Christmas holiday. They will gather in Fort Myers, Florida for a week of training during Winter Break before returning to campus to open the 2022 portion of the dual schedule by hosting SMU on January 8 at 11 a.m.
