Owls win three events to move into second
In Brief: Madison Howe and Arielle Hayon posted two of the fastest 100 butterfly times in school history to highlight a standout performance by Rice on the second day of the Phill Hansel Invitational.
The Details: Howe and Hayon finished 1-2 in the 100 fly, Howe winning in 52.82 and Hayon following in 53.43. Both times met the NCAA B standard. Howe's time bettered her personal best of 53.20 and retained her place as the second-fastest in the event in Rice history, while Hayon's time moved into fourth. Their win set the stage for the Owls who went on to pick up wins by Marta Cano-Minarro in the 200 free and in the 800 free relay (Virginie Qian, Cano-Minarro, Lauren McDougall, and Shannon Campbell) as well as a second-place finish in the 100 back by Imogen Meers-who just missed cracking the Rice top five by matching her career best with a 54.61 clocking-to close out the night and vault the Owls from third to second in the team standings..
Rice set the tone early when Zoe Spitz, Sini Koivu, Hayon, and Becca Evans held off a late charge from Washington State to finish second in the 200 medley relay. Sydney Morgan followed with a sixth place finish in the 400 IM A final while Amelia Kane, Qian, and Erin Vance swept the top three spots in the B final of the same event, setting the stage for the wins by Howe, Cano-Minarro and the relay.
Seth Huston: "The Owls had great energy and created momentum from one event to another. It was a fun day! Maddy and Arielle earning NCAA B cuts in 100 fly was awesome to see. Our 200 freestylers really executed great race plans and were led by Marta Cano with the win, including the 800 free relay.
The Standings: San Diego State 887; Rice 766, Houston 678, Washington State 618, Colorado State 512, Tulane 398.5, U.S. Air Force Academy 308, New Mexico 123.5
Up Next: Action concludes at 10 a.m. on Saturday with preliminaries in the 200 Backstroke, 100 Freestyle, 200 Breaststroke and 200 Butterfly. Finals for those events in addition to the 1650 Freestyle and 400 Freestyle Relay will begin a 3 p.m. There is no admission charge to attend the competition.
