"As part of our Vision for Victory strategic plan, we need to tell the stories of our student-athletes in ways that reach the broadest possible audience." Rice Director of Athletics Joe Karlgaard said. "While we've had sport-specific television shows at various times in the past, this is the first time we've created platform for all of our student-athletes."
The debut show takes a look at some of the efforts by the Rice Sports Medicine team to prepare for voluntary summer workouts as well as the university's plans for creating additional classroom space for students. Volleyball standout Nicole Lennon is featured as the first "Outstanding Owl" while the Owls archive piece will feature Rice Stadium.
Show host Lauren Leal is a Houston native and University of Houston graduate who has worked for multiple sports teams and networks, including the Houston Astros, Texans, Rockets, Dynamo, ESPN 97.5, SalsaTV and Texas Sports Nation. In addition to premiering on alternating Thursdays, each episode of the Rice Owls Sports Show will air three additional times on AT&T SportsNet SW, with segments and expanded interviews slated to be made available online and through the Owls various social media channels.
The second episode will debut on Thursday, August 27 with additional shows to follow every other Thursday through January 14, 2021.
