
Carvalho and Ogwumike Take Top Honors at Night of the Owl

HOUSTON – Rice University student-athletes celebrated a successful year on Tuesday with a virtual version of the annual Night of the Owl event, presented by the R Association. Men's cross country/track and field athlete Adolfo Carvalho and basketball player Erica Ogwumike claimed the top honors bestowed on Rice University scholar-athletes, respectively.
In addition, the Rice student-athletes were recognized for earning their highest cumulative GPA (3.307) ever recorded, which came through the first semester of the 2019-20 academic year.
Carvalho was named the 89th winner of the Bob Quin Award while Ogwumike became the 45th winner of the Joyce Pounds Hardy Award, which are presented each year to Rice's most outstanding male and female student-athletes.
Carvalho was a team captain and C-USA All-Conference performer on the men's cross country team while also running distance events in track and field. Carvalho, who just completed his Masters in space studies and was an astrophysics/mathematics major, was a four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and recorded three top-25 finishes at the C-USA Cross Country Championships.
Carvalho was named the 2018 C-USA Men's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year and the 2020 Rice University Scholar Athlete of the Year. Most recently, Carvalho earned the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship Award, which will allow him to study protoplanetary disks in Chile for nine months.
Ogwumike is one of the most decorated players in Rice women's basketball history, having earned back-to-back C-USA Player of the Year awards. This past season Ogwumike averaged 19 points and 10.3 rebounds while leading the Owls to their second straight C-USA regular season title.
A member of the illustrious 2,000 points/1,000 rebounds club, Ogwumike concluded her three-year Rice career ranked first in scoring average (17.7 ppg), second in rebounding average (10.1 rpg), third in free throw percentage (81.4%), fourth in made free throws (421), fifth in rebounds (905) and sixth in total points (1,597). Ogwumike shined equally as bright in the classroom, earning CoSIDA Academic First Team All-American honors and a three-time C-USA All-Academic Team honoree.
Carvalho and Zinedine Russell (women's track and field) were honored with the Dr. Hubert E. Bray and Margie E. Sass Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards, recognizing them as Rice's top student-athletes.
Lucas Ribeiro (men's track and field) and Bradley Rozner (football) shared the Male Newcomer of the Year Award while Grace Forbes (women's track and field) was named the Female Newcomer of the Year.
Rice volleyball head coach Genny Volpe was named Head Coach of the Year while men's track and field assistant coach Brek Christensen was named Assistant Coach of the Year.
Haley Kostyshyn (soccer) was presented with the Dr. Leland Winston, MD Courage and Diligence Award, presented to the student-athlete who displayed exceptional courage and diligence in the face of a serious injury.
The Stancliff-Duckett "R" Association Scholarship was presented to Carvalho while Ogwumike took home the Stancliff-Sass "R" Association Scholarship.
The evening also included the "Best Team and Individual Moments Awards", which went to Rice Volleyball defeating No. 3 Texas and Bradley Rozner for his three touchdown game vs. Middle Tennessee.
