Four Owls Entered In Women's 5-K
Rice seniors Sarah Nowaski and Claire Therien, sophomore Shannon Jelley and true freshman Shannon Campbell are four of the more than 70 women competing in the national open water championship for collegiate swimmers. The 5,000-meter (3.1 miles) event is sponsored by College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) and hosted by the University of Kansas at Lone Star Lake near Lawrence, Kan.
One individual from the respective women's and men's events will be crowned a CSCAA national champion. Teams will compete for the fourth-ever open water team title, where Rice swimming has been the national runner-up in each of the last three years. In 2018 meet Nowaski was third and Therien was fifth.
Rice head swim coach Seth Huston, now in his 18th season at the helm of the Owls program, previews the meet in the above video.
