Owls, LSU & Houston Return For More Racing On Saturday
Going The Distance: The Rice distance racers were again sound and solid. The Owl trio of Therien (10:11.35), senior Hanna Huston (10:13.13) and Sarah Nowaski (10:17.57) claimed each of the top three spots in the rugged 1,000-freestyle. So far this season Rice swimmers hold four of the top eight spots in Conference USA in that event. The same Owl trio came back later in the meet to take 3rd, 4th and 5th in the 500-freestyle, only this time with Nowaski leading the way with a time of 5:03.17.
New Season Bests: Six Owls posted seven new season-best marks on the night. The list included Sydney Franzen in the 200-butterfly (2:08.21), Cailey Renken in the 200-IM (2:15.57), Therien (10:11.35) and Nowaski (10:17.57) in the 1,000-free, and Shannon Jelley in both the 100-free (54.74) and the 1,000 (10:31.17).
Coach Huston: "Claire and Sarah both had good swims tonight," said Rice head coach Seth Huston. "I also liked Brittany Bui in the butterfly, and Ellery Parish had a strong 1:50.15 in the 200-free."
Next Up: The same three teams are back in action again on Saturday (Feb. 2), in a timed-trial format with 17 events including all five relays. Start time at LSU is set for 10 a.m.
