Owls Win Seventh Straight, Adekunle Posts Career Day

HOUSTON – Rice sophomore middle blocker Anota Adekunle tied her career-high on Sunday with 18 kills to help lead the Owls to their seventh straight win, defeating Middle Tennessee 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-10) for the team's sixth consecutive sweep.
No. 21 Rice (16-1, 5-0) has won 19 straight sets dating back to the team's upset over No. 3 Texas on Nov. 3.
The Owls set a season-high in conference play by hitting .430 as a team, committing just eight errors on 86 attacks. Adekunle posted the 18 kills on 23 attacks for a sizzling .739 hitting clip while also adding a team-high five blocks.
Junior outside hitter Nicole Lennon joined Adekunle in double-figure kills with 11 kills on 27 attacks (.333).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
Rice dominated the opening frame, leading start to finish in a 25-18 victory. Adekunle recorded eight of her 18 kills in the first game alone on nine attacks, hitting a blistering .889. The Owls hit .500 as a team while MT hit just .214. Adria Martinez totaled seven assists and Rice posted a sideout rate of 77 percent.
Set 2
The Owls closed the second game on an 8-2 run to win 25-17. During that stretch, Martinez and Tori Woogk tallied an ace while Adekunle added three kills. Lennon came alive in the frame with six kills on 11 attacks (.545) while Martinez dished out seven more assists.
Set 3
Rice played one of their more complete sets of the season, dominating the Blue Raiders 25-10. The Owls raced out to an 11-1 lead and never looked back, as Adekunle added six more kills and Rice hit .520 as a team. Martinez recorded an assists on 12 of Rice's 14 kills.

The Owls start a stretch where they play six road contests over their next nine matches starting Friday, Oct. 18 at Marshall. Rice will then travel to Louisiana Tech for a 1 p.m. tilt on Sunday, Oct. 20.
