Owls Next Host C-USA Foe UTSA Sunday At 6 PM
Rice is now 2-5-0 on the season and 0-1-0 to begin C-USA league play. Middle Tennessee improved to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference. The teams were deadlocked at the end of regulation and the first of two overtime periods.
Peyton DePriest scored the game-winner for the Blue Raiders after making a steal near the Rice 18 and taking a quick shot in the 104th minute of the contest. The goal was her second of the night after she put Middle Tennessee up 2-1 with a score in the 62nd minute.
Rice opened the scoring with the first goal of the season by senior Marissa Topolski in the 11th minute. Middle Tennessee moved in front 2-1 with a pair of second half goals, but Rice rallied to tie the match in the 66th minute. Topolski blasted a close-range shot that was saved by Middle Tennessee, but deflected away near the six-yard box.
Owl true freshman Caleigh Boeckx opportunistically played the carom and fired a shot to the back of the net on the left side for her second goal of the year and a 2-2 score. Both Topolski and Boeckx had good looks on overtime shots in the 99th and 101st minutes respectively. Topolski shared the match lead with five shot attempts. The teams were dead-even with 20 shots each and Rice held a narrow 5-3 margin in corner kicks.
