HOUSTON, Texas — Rice golf alum Mario Carmona fired a 12-under par 68-64/132 to finish second at the U.S. Amateur qualifier at Golfcrest Country Club to earn a spot in next month's tournament at Pebble Beach.
Carmona will be making his second appearance at the U.S. Amateur, having also qualified in 2016. He joins Mitchell Meissner as former Owls that will participate in the tournament.
The Houston native opened the event with a four-under par 68. Carmona then shot an eight-under 64 in the final round, the second-best round of the tournament.
The second team All-Conference USA member began the day with three birdies in the first four holes. After bogeys on holes five and eight, Carmona bounced back with three straight birdies on holes nine through 11. He dropped a shot with a bogey on 15 but got it back on 17 to finish with a 68.
He began the final round with five birdies through the first seven holes. Carmona bogeyed the eighth but birdied holes nine and 10. He parred the next six holes before finishing the day with consecutive birdies.
Carmona comes off a senior campaign that saw him earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Bryan Regional.
