HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women's basketball team saw their school record 15-game home winning streak come to a close Thursday evening, falling 70-62 to the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters.
Rice (19-8, 9-6) fell at Tudor Fieldhouse for the first time since they suffered an 80-75 loss to WKU on Mar. 4, 2017. Redshirt sophomore guard Erica Ogwumike scored a team-high 22 points in the loss, while tying a season-high with four made three-pointers, along with a team-high nine rebounds. Junior Nicole Iademarco scored 19 points in 39 minutes and made two of the Owls' eight made three-pointers.
Tech (19-10, 10-6) ended the nation's 10th-longest home win streak behind a career-high 30 points from Kierra Anthony, who made 13-of-19 shots from the field and 3-of-5 attempts at the free throw line. Taylor Stahly added an additional 14 points while making 4-of-8 attempts beyond the arc.
Rice won the opening quarter, 13-12, behind eight early points from Ogwumike, and took and extended the lead to 27-24 nearing the end of the half after seven more points from the Cypress, Texas native. However, Tech closed the final 2:54 of the quarter on a 12-0 run, which included a Stahly three-pointer as time expired to put Rice in a 36-27 hole.
After falling behind by as many as 11 points in the third, Rice chipped away at the deficit and climbed to within 42-40 (2:29-3rd) behind six points from Iademarco. Just as in the second quarter though, Tech closed the period with an 8-0 spurt to push the advantage back up to 50-40.
Rice outscored Tech 22-20 in the final quarter but an Owls comeback was not meant to be in a rare home loss.
The Owls will attempt to get back in the win column on Saturday when they host North Texas at 4:30 p.m. on Senior Day in Rice's regular season finale. There will be a special pre-game ceremony to honor Rice's lone senior, Wendy Knight. Saturday's game will be streamed on ESPN3.
