Soccer Season Comes To An End With 2-0 Loss To North Texas
With the loss in the single-elimination tournament Rice's 2018 season has come to a close. The Owls finish out the year with a 7-9-1 record. North Texas advanced to Friday's semifinal round. The league's automatic bid the the NCAA Tournament will be decided on Sunday with the Championship Final.
Rice played a sensational first half against a North Texas team that came in as the tournament's No. 1 seed. In the first period the Owls held a solid 10-7 advantage in shots with a 6-1 margin in corner kicks. Rice controlled the tempo and played in the Mean Green's side of the field, but did not have any goals on the scoreboard to show for it.
The Mean Green opened the scoring in the 63rd minute. After taking a few moments to get on the same page the referees awarded Madeline Guderian her first goal of the season. North Texas stretched the margin to 2-0 with a goal off a corner kick in the 74th minute.
Rice senior Annie Walker led all players with seven shots in the contest. The Mean Green finished with a total of four saves. The game's box score is available at the above link.
