Rice Seniors Come Up Big On Program's Senior Night
Rice improved to 6-7-1 on the season and 4-3-1 in C-USA play for a total of 13 points in the league standings. The C-USA point total, based on three points for a win and one for a tie, is used to determine each team's place in the conference standings. After Friday's win Rice moved into a five-tie for fifth place, and is for the time being one of the top eight teams that would advance to the league's postseason tournament. There are still two more C-USA games to finish on the regular season schedule.
The Owls all but finished up with FIU early in the first half, scoring three goals in the first 31 minutes of the contest. Mazero opened the scoring in the 16th minute, opportunistically playing a carom off the FIU keeper for her third goal of the season. Rice's senior tandem of Walker and Topolski were back on the offensive in the 17th for a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Ashley Burgess used some fancy footwork to stretch the margin to 3-0 in the 31st minute, but the offense wasn't finished. Rebecca Keane scored in the 62nd minute before assisting on freshman Madison Kent's first career goal in the 86th - a season-high five goals on the night.
Rice finished with a season-high 26 shots and held a 6-1 margin in corner kicks. A total of 19 different Owls played in the game for Rice. FIU dropped to 0-15-1 overall and 0-7-1 in conference.
The Owls are back home for their next game on Sunday (Oct. 21) vs. Florida Atlantic. The 1 pm match is Rice's final home game of the regular season.
