Golf Readies for Conference USA Championship

HOUSTON -- Coming off a victory at the Jim West Intercollegiate, Rice looks to take its strong play into the Conference USA Championship, played Sunday-Wednesday, April 23-26, at the par-72, 6,969-yard Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Ark.
The championship consists of 54 holes of stroke play over three days over the first three days. Following stroke play, the top four teams will advance to a seeded match play round on Wednesday, April 27. The team champion after match play will receive C-USA's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
"(Texarkana Country Club) is the best that I've seen it," said head coach Justin Emil. "Everything is in place for a great championship. I can't wait to see how the team competes."
Rice will be joined by six teams in the top 100 of Golfstat's rankings, including No. 53 Middle Tennessee, No. 55 UTEP, No. 62 North Texas, No. 74 Charlotte, No. 82 UAB and No. 94 UTSA.
Junior Mario Carmona leads the Owls in the No. 1 position. The Houston, Texas native leads the squad with a 72.20 stroke average after finishing second at the Jim West Intercollegiate. He has recorded two top five and four top ten finishes while leading the squad with 15 rounds of par or better.
In the No. 2 position is freshman Trevor Brown. The Austin, Texas native holds a 72.93 stroke average on the year and is second on the team with 11 rounds of par or better.
Junior Mitchell Meissner will tee off in the No. 3 position. He is second on the team with a 72.57 stroke average while tying for the team lead with four top 20 finishes this year.
Freshman Nicholas Duggan and sophomore Grant Rogers will tee off in the fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Duggan is averaging 75.00 strokes per round while Rogers is averaging 75.56 strokes.
Play begins at 8 a.m. CT on Monday. Rice will tee off from hole one and will be paired with UTSA. Fans can follow all the action at golfstat.com.
