Bastrop, Texas — Rice holds a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Jim West Intercollegiate, played at the par-72, 7,205-yard Wolfdancer Golf Club.
The Owls are two-under par, one-stroke ahead of Southeastern Louisiana. Rice opened with a 289 before closing the day with a three-under 285, its eighth round of par or better this year.
"Today was a little uncertain with the weather forecast, but we were able to get both rounds in without delay," said head coach Justin Emil. "The team played well and Mario (Carmona) really got it going on the last nine holes to give us a solid round. Nick (Duggan) also came through with two solid rounds. I'm really looking forward to seeing them compete tomorrow."
Carmona is tied for second place at five-under par, three shots off the lead held by New Mexico State's Ryo Harada. Carmona began the day with a 71 before following it with a season-low tying 68. His two runs under par now give him a team-leading 15 on the year and 28 in his career while his 36-hole score of 139 tied his career-best.
Duggan fired consecutive rounds of 71 to sit in 12th-place at two-under par. He now has seven rounds of par or better on the year and his 36-hole score of 142 is a career-low.
Junior Mitchell Meissner is tied for 23rd-place at two-over par after carding rounds of 74-72/146. The 72 was his ninth round of par or better this year and the 21st of his career.
Freshman Trevor Brown carded a 73-74/147, tied at three-over par in 25th-place and sophomore Grant Rogers posted consecutive 76's/152 to sit in a tie for 44th-place at eight-over par.
The final round begins tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. CT. Rice will be paired with Southeastern Louisiana and New Mexico State.
