The Rice swimmers officially set the teams and events for the program's annual Blue-Gray Week intrasquad competitions beginning on Oct. 3 (Monday), and this year Owl fans and the general public have a chance to pick one of the event winners via social media voting.
The swim team's annual Blue-Gray Week is rugged series of competitions between the Owl squad that is divided into two groups, Blue and Gray. The teams then go head-to-head in a variety of competitions resembling a decathlon... only tougher because the Blue-Gray Week lasts four days and not just two.
"This is a great opportunity to get our competitive juices flowing and have some fun mixing things up a bit," said Rice head coach Seth Huston, now in his 15th season at the helm, of the program. "We want to create some excitement and momentum into our first weekend of competition."
The Blue-Gray Week events begin Monday (Oct. 3) with a team Cheer-off. For the first time in program history the squad with the best cheer will be determined by public voting on Instagram. (Look for details on the team's official Instagram account at RiceSwimming.)
October 4 (Tues.) is a Rice Trivia Bowl where almost any category under Willy's Statue is fair game. October 5 (Wed.) is team sports (to be announced at a later time, and excludes swimming). The completion concludes Oct. 6 (Thurs.) with an Intrasquad Meet. The events in the meet are listed as: 200-yard top/bottom medley relay, 50-yard fin kick, 50-free, 50- breaststroke, 400 water polo ball relay, 50-back, 50-parachute swim, 50-fly and 400-inner tube relay. The official teams are as follows:
