The Rice swim team finished second overall at first-ever CSCAA Collegiate National Open Water Championships held in Lawrence, Kansas.
Rice was sound and solid in the inaugural 5,000-meter open water championship meet sponsored by College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). In addition to the Owls placing second overall as a team, sophomore Hanna Huston was fourth and true freshman Sarah Nowaski was fifth among a field of 38 competitors with times of 1:05.50.08 and 1:06.22.30, respectively. True freshman Claire Therien was ninth (1:08.12.22). Sophomore Sydney Franzen was 12th (1:09.09.56).
Meet host Kansas won the team title on the strength of a 1-2-3 finish in the individual standings. Rice head coach Seth Huston was pleased with the team's 2016-2017 debut.
"The girls swam really well" said Rice head coach Seth Huston. "We just lack experience right now. The future looks bright."
