
Rice Duo Qualifies for U.S. Amateur

HOUSTON, Texas —Mitchell Meissner and Mario Carmona, who will be juniors on the Rice golf team this fall, finished in the top two of the U.S. Amateur qualifying tournament played at The Club at Sonterra in San Antonio to advance to next month's national tournament.
Meissner opened the tournament with a 67 to take a two-stroke lead into Monday's final round. He answered with a 66 for a two-round score of 133 (-11) to win the tournament by nine-strokes.
Carmona began the tournament with a 70. He followed that up with a 72 for a two-round score of 142 (-2) to finish in second-place.
The duo, along with Baylor's Nick Thornton who finished in third-place, have qualified for the U.S. Amateur which will be played Aug. 15-21 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
They become the first Rice letterwinners to advance to the national championship since Michael Whitehead in 2010.
Past champions of the U.S. Amateur include Bobby Jones, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods.
