IRVING, Texas — Rice's Alicia Caldwell has been named Conference USA Swimmer of the Week for Dec. 13-19, the league office announced Tuesday (Dec. 20).
Caldwell won four individual events and swam on three winning Rice relays to pace the Owls at the Incarnate Word Invitational over the weekend, an extended 18-event swim meet featuring four competing teams in San Antonio. The Sydney, Australia, native made the NCAA Provisional standard with new season-best times while winning both the 100 (53.66) and 200-yard backstroke (1:58.32). She also posted a career-best 1:48.00 to win the 200-freestyle with the fourth-fastest mark in school history, and raced to a win the 100-free (50.72). In addition to a steady 23.96 as an exhibition entry in the 50-freestyle, Caldwell recorded an eye-opening 4:50.83 in an exhibition 500-free that was her first attempt at that distance this season.
This is the second time in her career for Caldwell to be named the C-USA Swimmer of the Week and the fourth time this season a Rice Owl has earned the honor. Junior Jaecey Parham received the honor on Nov. 8 and sophomore Marie-Claire Schillinger is a two-time honoree (Oct. 11 and Nov. 1).
