Hattiesburg, Miss.--Rice golf shot a final round seven-over par 291 to finish 18-over par in 11th-place at the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate, played at the par-71, 6,902-yard Hattiesburg Country Club.
"We missed an opportunity today," said Rice head coach Justin Emil. "The golf course was yielding a lot of birdies, but unfortunately, we couldn't get the putts to fall that we needed to make a move in the right direction. We still left Hattiesburg with some positives this week. There's a lot of time for us to improve before our next event, so we'll make the most of the time at home."
Sophomores Mario Carmona and Jay Burlison and senior James Lee led Rice in a tie for 36th-place at four-par 217. Burlison fired a 69 for his first career round of par or better, while Lee and Carmona posted rounds of 72 and 75, respectively.
Junior Kevin Reilly shot a final round 74 to finish nine over par 222 in a tie for 54th-place. Junior Alex Levy and freshman Will Voetsch tied for 57th-place at 10-over par 223. Levy fired an even par 71, his ninth career round of par or better, while Voetsch closed with a 74.
McNeese State won the tournament at 23-over par, 16 shots ahead of second-place Louisiana-Lafayette. McNeese's Robert MacIntyre earned medalist honors, finishing 14-under par, four shots ahead of Louisiana-Lafayette's Fernando Cruz Valle and Andrew Ertel of Sam Houston State.
The Owls returns to the links Oct. 12-13, when it co-hosts the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland.
