HOUSTON—Rice golf opens the 2015-16 campaign this Monday-Tuesday, September 14-15, when it travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., for the 13th annual Sam Hall Intercollegiate, hosted by Southern Miss. The tournament will be played at the par-71, 6,902-yard Hattiesburg Country Club.
"I'm excited to get things rolling this season on a golf course we are very familiar with and a team that is very competitive," said head coach Justin Emil. "After only a few weeks of practice and qualifying I am pleased with what I have seen and now it's time to tee it up in some competition. Our success this season depends on how well we can remain focused on what we are faced with in the moment. It's a long season so there is no use wasting energy on what's in front or behind us."
This will be the sixth consecutive year that Rice will participate in the tournament.
Joining Rice in the field are Conference USA foes Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, UTSA and host Southern Miss. Also competing are UALR, Arkansas State, Jackson State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, McNeese State, Mississippi State, Sam Houston State, South Alabama and Southeastern Louisiana.
Kevin Reilly will lead the Owls in the No. 1 position. The 2014 All-Conference USA member led the squad last year with a stroke average of 74.37, while earning two top ten finishes. In last year's Sam Hall Intercollegiate, he tied for eighth-place.
Mario Carmona will be in the No. 2 position. Last year, the Houston, Texas, native was third on the team with a 74.43 stroke average while earning two top 20 finishes.
In the No. 3 position will be Alex Levy. Last year, he had a stroke average of 75.39. The junior will see his first action in the fall season since his freshman campaign.
Freshman Will Voetsch will be playing in his first collegiate tournament in the No. 4 position, while James Lee tees off in the No. 5 spot after averaging 74.69 strokes last year. Jay Burlison will participate as an individual. The Salinas, Calif., native will see his first action after sitting out last year after transferring from Cal.
Play begins at 8:30 a.m. Fans can follow all the action live at golfstat.com.
