IRVING, Texas -- Rice University men's golfer Mitchell Meissner was named to the 2014-15 Conference USA All-Freshman team, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Meissner was joined on the team, which was selected based on season rankings provided by GolfStat, by Michael Cotton (North Texas), Taylor Eyster (UAB), Lee Hodges (UAB) and Zander Lozano (UTSA).
The rookie notched a 75.03 stroke average over 29 rounds this season and was the team's top finisher in two events. The San Antonio native's low round of the season came at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship final round, where he placed 35th overall and led the Owls with a 220 (+4).
In the following tournament, Meissner posted his best 54-hole score of the season and led the squad once again with a 75-74-70--219 (+6). He closed the season ranked second on the team in his first Conference USA Championship appearance with a 225 (+9), good for 35th place.
Meissner also earned a place on the 2015 C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and claimed a C-USA Academic Medal for his excellence in the classroom.
Meissner is the sixth Owl to earn all-freshman honors, joining teammates Kevin Reilly (2014) and Jeff Wibawa (2011) as well as former Rice golfers Jade Scott (2010), Michael Whitehead (2008) and Kyle Kelley (2006).
In addition to the all-freshman team, C-USA announced Victor Lange (Louisiana Tech) as Golfer of the Year and North Texas' Brad Stracke as Coach of the Year. UAB's Hodges claimed Freshman of the Year honors.
