SUMMIT, N.J. - Rice University incoming freshman Will Voetsch joined rising sophomore Mitchell Meissner in advancing to the sectional round of U.S. Open Qualifying as he posted a 72 (E) on Thursday. Sectionals are set for June 8 and Voetsch will compete in Purchase, N.Y.
Voetsch is one of four players - and one of just two amateurs - to advance from the local qualifier at Canoe Brook Country Club. Voetsch posted four birdies in his round, including on three-straight holes on the front nine, to place third in the field of 78 golfers.
Nearly 10,000 golfers began the qualifying process, which will determine the field of 156 to compete in the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash. on June 15-21. Twelve sites host sectional play, which consists of 36 holes.
The New Vernon, N.J. native signed with the Owls last fall after claiming second place at NJAC conference tournaments twice and took fifth place at the New Jersey state championship playing for head coach Sean Flanagan at Delbarton School. He led the team to three conference championships and two county championships, including a 21-3 record.
He is the top-ranked 2015 recruit in the state and has had success on the amateur circuit as well. He posted top five finishes at three events last summer. At the USGA Junior Boys Qualifier in June in Paramus, N.J., he fired a 75-69--144 to take fourth out of the field of 85. He followed that performance up with a second place finish at the Ravenwood Junior Championship with a 71-67-71--209, in a field of 102 golfers. After taking 12th place at the AJGA Philadelphia Junior tournament, he wrapped up the summer with a third-place finish at the AJGA Junior hosted by Morgan Hoffman.
2014 graduate Landon Michelson also competed in a local qualifying event on Tuesday and carded a 70 at Southern Hills Plantation Golf Club in Brooksville, Fla. The former Owl earned a place as an alternate for sectional qualifying.
Local qualifying continues through May 21.
