Meissner Advances in U.S. Open Qualifying

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Rice University golfer Mitchell Meissner posted a 69 (-3) on Tuesday in the U.S. Open local qualifier at Cedar Creek Golf Club in San Antonio. The freshman placed second in the field of 100 golfers at the event to move on to the sectional round, set for June 8 at Dallas' Northwood Club.
Nearly 10,000 golfers began the qualifying process, which will determine the field of 156 to compete in the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash. on June 15-21. Twelve sites host sectional play, which consists of 36 holes.
In his rookie season at Rice, Meissner notched a 75.03 stroke average over 29 rounds and was the team's top finisher in two events as he earned a place on the Conference USA All-Freshman team. The San Antonio native notched his low round of the season (70) at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship final round, where he placed 35th overall and led the Owls with a 220 (+4).
In the following tournament, Meissner posted his best 54-hole score of the season and led the squad once again with a 75-74-70--219 (+6). He closed the season ranked second on the team in his first Conference USA Championship appearance with a 225 (+9), good for 35th place and second among the Owls.
Meissner earned a place on the 2015 C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and claimed a C-USA Academic Medal for his excellence in the classroom.
2014 graduate Landon Michelson also competed in a local qualifying event on Tuesday and carded a 70 at Southern Hills Plantation Golf Club in Brooksville, Fla. The former Owl earned a place as an alternate for sectional qualifying.
Local qualifying continues through May 21.
