CABO, Mexico - As tournament play continues, Rice University men's golf steadily improved in the second round to post a 300-297—597 (+29) through Monday's second round. The Owls remain 14th overall heading into Tuesday's finale at Querencia Golf Club.
Sophomore Alex Levy carded a 75-73—148 (+6) to move up to a tie for 43rd place to pace the Owls. He added three more birdies with 10 pars on Monday to match his low round of the spring.
Senior Tommy Economou follows in a tie for 49th at 71-78—149 (+7), with 12 pars in the second round after knocking in an eagle and two birdies on Sunday. Mitchell Meissner also stands in 49th place with a 75-74—149 (+7). The rookie sank two of his three birdies in Monday's round.
Kevin Reilly rebounded from a tough opening round to finish the day in 63rd place with a 79-74—153 (+11), including three of his five birdies at the event.
James Lee also improved his score on Monday with a 79-76—155 (+13) to rank 67th overall. All three of his second-round birdies came on the back nine.
No. 12 South Florida took over the team lead at 559 (-9), one stroke ahead of No. 14 Stanford and three-strokes ahead of Sunday's leader, No. 2 Florida State. The Owls stand 12 strokes behind No. 7 LSU for 13th place overall.
Top-ranked Cheng-Tsung Pan from Washington is tied for the individual lead with a 135 (-7), alongside Stanford's Viraat Badhwar and USF's Rigel Fernandes. Fourth-place Corey Pereira (Washington) is two strokes back.
The third round tees off at 10 a.m. CT on Tuesday morning. The Owls are paired with LSU and No. 39 Arkansas for the final round.
