CABO, Mexico - Against a challenging field that includes eight top-20 nationally ranked teams, Rice University men's golf carded a 300 (+16) to open the Querencia Cabo Collegiate in 14th place through 18 holes at the par-71 Querencia Golf Club.
Senior Tommy Economou led the squad with a 71 (E), including an eagle and two birdies. He ranks 18th heading into Monday's second round.
Alex Levy and Mitchell Meissner are tied for 55th after each shot a 75 (+4) on Sunday. Levy tallied three birdies in the opening round while the rookie added one of his own.
James Lee and Kevin Reilly both shot a 79 (+8) in the opener to tie for 63rd overall. Lee holed one birdie and Reilly added two.
Second-ranked Florida State leads the field with a 275 (-9), one stroke ahead of No. 12 South Florida. The Owls stand eight strokes behind No. 7 LSU for 13th place.
USF's Rigel Fernandes holds the individual lead with a seven-under par 64, three strokes ahead of four players. The top-ranked player in the nation, Washington's Cheng-Tsung Pan, stands sixth at 68 (-3).
The second round begins on Monday morning and the tournament concludes on Tuesday with the third round.
