
Golf Takes 14th at UTSA Oak Hills Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Rice University men's golf closed out the spring-opening UTSA Oak Hills Invitational on Tuesday with a 14th-place finish. The Owls carded a 296-303-299--898 (+46) at the par-71, 6,765-yard Oak Hills Country Club.
Competing as an individual, senior Tommy Economou was Rice's top finisher in a tie for 29th place at 73-72-75--220 (+7). Four of his eight birdies came in the first round while he notched 11 pars in the second round to come within one stroke of his low round of the fall.
Freshman Mitchell Meissner paced the team in scoring at 73-76-73--222 (+9) to finish 34th. The rookie knocked in an eagle on the par-4 eighth hole in the third round to accompany eight birdies at the tournament.
Kevin Reilly followed in 50th place at 73-75-78--226 (+13). The sophomore sank one birdie in each of the three rounds. Senior Joe Beck III finished just two strokes back in 56th place with a 76-80-72--228 (+15). He shot three of his four birdies in the opening round and carded 15 pars in Tuesday's final round.
Jeff Wibawa shot four of his eight birdies on Monday morning to finish with a 79-76-76--231 (+18), good for 66th place. Junior Trey Johnson rounded out the squad in 76th at 74-76-86--236 (+23). He notched one birdie in the opening round and two more on Monday afternoon.
Baylor led wire-to-wire to win the team title at 850 (-2), 16 strokes ahead of host UTSA in second place.
BU's Kyle Jones claimed the individual medal with a 205 (-8), two strokes ahead of Houston Baptist's Preston Stanley.
Also competing from Conference USA, North Texas finished fourth at 876 (+24) and Louisiana Tech placed 11th with an 891 (+39).
The Owls return home to host the Bayou City Collegiate Championship on Feb. 20-22 at the Golf Club of Houston.
