IRVING, Texas – Rice freshman Marie-Claire Schillinger has been named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week for Dec. 14-21, the league office announced Tuesday (Dec. 22) from its headquarters in Irving, Texas.
Last weekend Schillinger recorded one of the fastest times in school history on the way to winning two individual events and swimming on four winning Owl relays at the Incarnate Word Invitational in San Antonio. She won the meet's 100-yard breaststroke with a career-best time of 1:02.73, the third-fastest mark in school history and equaling the top time in the conference so far this season. The Rice rookie then came back the next day to win the 200-breastsroke with a steady 2:15.91.
A native of Orinda, Calif., Schillinger also showed some versatility by reaching the championship final of the 100-freestyle where she finished sixth among a starting field of 15 entries with a time of 53.51. She was a valuable contributor to Rice winning no less than four relays, including the breaststroke leg of both medley relays and the third leg of the 400- & 800-free relays. Schillinger also contributed points in the 50-free with a 24.36 in B finals. Rice went on to win the annual three-day Invitational meet featuring a full program of 18 swim events.
This is the first time this season for Schillinger to be recognized as the C-USA Swimmer of the Week. Four different Rice swimmers have now been named the C-USA Swimmer of the Week a total of five times this season. Owls Kaitlyn Swinney (Nov. 3) and Alicia Caldwell (Nov. 25) have both earned the award, and Kiley Beall has won it twice (Oct. 27 and Dec. 8).
