
Caldwell Named C-USA Swimmer of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Rice sophomore Alicia Caldwell has been named the C-USA Swimmer of the Week for Nov. 17-23, the league office announced Tuesday (Nov. 24) from its headquarters in Irving, Texas.
Last weekend Caldwell won two individual events with a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying times, broke one school record and swam on two winning relays to help pace the Owls to a team-win at the Phill Hansel Invitational. The international standout from Australia was the star of the annual 10-team, three-day, invitational meet held across town at the University of Houston. In swimming five different individual events, Caldwell posted four marks that are the best in Conference USA so far this season. The summary of her full weekend of racing is as follows:
1st in 100-Backstroke – 54.43, NCAA ‘B' cut;
1st in 200-Backstroke – 1:57.19, NCAA ‘B' cut and new Rice school record;
2nd in 200-Freestyle – 1:48.62;
6th in 50-Freestyle – after a 23.61 in the morning prelims; (there were 85-starting entries in this event);
Also swam a 50.56 in an exhibition of the 100-freestyle that was not calculated for points in the team standings;
Swam the lead leg in Rice's winning 400-medley relay;
Swam the third leg in Rice's winning 800-freestyle relay;
Swam the lead leg in Rice's 200-medley relay that finished in third place;
Swam the lead leg in Rice's 200-freestyle relay that finished in fourth place;
Caldwell is the third Rice Owl to be named the C-USA Swimmer of the Week this season. Sophomores Kiley Beall and Kaitlyn Swinney earned the honor on Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, respectively.
The Rice swimmers are back in action on December 5. The Owls host longtime rival Texas A&M, the No. 2 ranked swim team in the country, at home at the Gibbs Recreation Center Competition Pool. The meet start time against the Aggies is set for 12 noon.
