HOUSTON --With a talented group of veterans returning, including the school-record-setting backstroke duo of Kiley Beall and Alicia Caldwell, as well as one of the top recruiting classes in Conference USA, the Rice swim team is anxious to get the 2015-16 season started this weekend.
The swimmers open the 2015-2016 season on Friday (Oct. 16) in sunny Miami, Fla. With no shying away from competition, the Owls face defending C-USA champion FIU, league foe FAU and a local national power in the Miami Hurricanes at the Dual-a-Palooza.
Rice head coach Seth Huston, now in his 14th season at the help of the program has liked what he's seen of the team so far in fall training. There's also a familiar vibe from last year, or least similar level of expectation, when the Owls qualified a 200-medley relay for the NCAA Championships in a school record time of 1:37.04 that was the 11th fastest mark in the nation.
Coach Huston wouldn't be one to tempt fate, but things are looking so well in the fall training that there might not even be a need to wish the Owls `good luck,' but rather simply `good health.' He previews the season-opening meet in the video located here.
A year ago Rice swimmers returned to the NCAA Championships. The Owls also finished second in the National Collegiate Classic, a meet featuring NCAA Division I provisional qualifiers that has taken on the nickname of the Swimming NIT . The Blue & Gray is then home the following weekend (Oct. 23-24) to host the annual Rice Invitational.
