
Owls Open Strong, Settle Into 11th at Sam Hall Intercollegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - In opening the 2014-15 campaign, Rice University men's golf shot out of the gates with a stellar opening round at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate to tie for first with an even-par 284 before setting into the middle of the pack after a second-round 296 on Monday. The Owls look to close out the event with a strong finish on Tuesday at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
2014 Conference USA Freshman of the Year Kevin Reilly picked up where he left off last season as the Oviedo, Fla. native notched a 69-70—139 (-3), including an eagle and eight birdies on Monday. The sophomore ranks tied for third place in the field of 84 golfers.
James Lee followed in 39th place at 72-73—145 (+3). The junior tallied a pair of birdies in each round to accompany 26 pars.
In his first action in over a year, senior Jeff Wibawa looked sharp for the Owls with a 72-76-148 (+6), placing him 51st. The 2012-13 team scoring leader redshirted last season while recovering from an injury. He carded birdies on his first and last holes of the day.
Classmate Tommy Economou matched Wibawa's performance to tie in 51st as well with a 72-76—148 (+6). He tallied 28 pars on the day as well as two birdies in the first round.
Joe Beck III rounded out the squad with an 81-77—158 (+16). Two of the senior's three birdies came in the afternoon round of play. He stands 82nd heading into Tuesday's final round.
Making his collegiate debut, Mario Carmona put together a pair of solid rounds while competing as an individual, finishing the day in a tie for 11th place at 72-69—141 (-1). The Houston native added six birdies on the day.
Southeastern Louisiana leads the field at 561 (-7), four strokes ahead of host Southern Miss. The Owls trail 10th-place Arkansas-Little Rock by just one stroke with 18 holes to play.
Southern Miss' Casey Fernandez ranks as the top individual at 134 (-8), one stroke up on SELA's Eamon Bradley.
