
Golf Opens Play at Ram Masters Invitational

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - A strong afternoon round put Rice University golf in a strong position at the Ram Masters Intercollegiate at Fort Collins Country Club. The Owls tallied a 295-293--588 (+28) to rank eighth in a crowded field heading into Tuesday's final round.
Rice ranked third among the 15-team field in par-five scoring with a 4.87 average per hole and the Owls posted a 4.26 average on par-four holes to rank fifth. The squad's 19 birdies were the fifth-most on Monday while the team's 102 pars were the sixth-best total.
Senior Jeff Wibawa tied for the team lead on Monday with a 70-75--145 (+5), including an Eagle on the par-five first hole in his opening round. He is tied for 16th place after carding four birdies on the day.
Kevin Reilly matched Wibawa with a 73-72--145 (+5) after notching five birdies over 36 holes. After notching his first top-10 finish at last year's event, the sophomore stands just two strokes back of eighth place through two rounds.
James Lee bounced back from a slow start to carve seven strokes off in his afternoon round to stand in 42nd place. The junior carded a 78-71--149 (+9) with four of his six birdies coming in the second round.
Rookie Mario Carmona finished the day just one stroke behind with a 74-76--150 (+10) on the par-70 course. He stands in a tie for 45th place in his second collegiate competition.
Classmate Mitchell Meissner made his Blue and Gray debut on Monday with a 79-75--154 (+14). His two birdies came on consecutive holes in the second round as he ranks tied for 58th overall.
Host Colorado State owns a five-stroke lead over Denver at 570 (+10). Wyoming's Drew McCullough holds a one-stroke lead over Kansas' Ben Welle with a 138 (-2).
Paired with Sacramento State and Wyoming, the Owls tee off on the first hole beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday in the final round.
