WACO, Texas - The Rice soccer team fell to Big 12 foe Baylor in overtime by a score of 1-0 in the season-opener for both teams Friday night in Waco, Texas.
After the Owls held-off the Baylor offense for 90 minutes, Bear forward Bri Campos converted on her only shot attempt of the night in the game's 97th minute for the 1-0 final. The shot found the back of the Owl net after making its way through traffic from 10 yards out on the right wing.
The score was the lone blemish on a solid effort by Owl goalkeeper Amy Czyz, who finished the contest with six saves. Rice tallied more corner kicks on the night, 11-7, including a 6-1 margin after the first half.
Baylor made a game-saving play in the second half by stopping an Owl penalty kick. In the 71st minute, Bear goalkeeper Michelle Kloss halted Lauren Hughes' PK attempt to keep the score at 0-0. Baylor is now 1-0 while the Owls open the season at 0-1.
The Rice soccer home-opener is set for Sunday, Aug. 24, at Holloway Field. The Owls host Dayton at 1 pm.
