HOUSTON, Texas - On the opening day of spring competition for Rice University golf, a pair of freshmen led the way for the Owls, who concluded the day in fifth place through 36 holes at Westwood Golf Club. Rice fired a 291-304—595 (+19) on Monday.
Rookie Alex Levy paced the squad with a 70-73—143 (-1) to tie for third overall, just two strokes back of the leader.
Junior Tommy Economou followed in 16th place with a 78-70—148 (+4). Sophomore Trey Johnson ranks 33rd in the field with a 72-80—152 (+8).
Freshman Kevin Reilly started strong and settled into 62nd with a 75-81—156 (+12), and James Lee rounded out the squad with a 74-85—159 (+15) in 69th.
Competing individually, Landon Michelson ranks 26th with a 75-76—151 (+7) and Joe Beck III stands in 69th with an 83-76—159 (+15).
Defending champion UTSA stands first place at 581 (+5), in a tie with Cincinnati. Old Dominion is five strokes back in third place and Sam Houston State ranks fourth at 592 (+16).
Cincinnati's Jared Howard leads the field at 141 (-3), one stroke up on Old Dominion's Jamison Randall.
The teams close out the event on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
