LAREDO, Texas - On the strength of Tommy Economou 's 43rd place finish, Rice University men's golf concluded the 62nd annual Border Olympics in 11th place with a 299-290-311--900 (+36) on Saturday at Laredo Country club.
Economou posted a strong start to the event with a pair of 73-stroke rounds on Friday. The sophomore finished with a 73-73-80--226 (+10) to pace the Owls. He sank an eagle in the opening round and added five birdies throughout the course of the 54-hole tournament.
Jeff Wibawa followed just one stroke back in a tie for 46th place at 75-74-78--227 (+11). The junior sank five of his 10 tournament birdies in the opening round. It was the fourth-straight tournament for Wibawa to finish among Rice's top two team finishers.
Brock Wilson and Joe Beck III each tied for 53rd place, one stroke off Wibawa's finish. Wilson notched a 75-76-77--228 (+12) with two birdies in each round. Beck fired Rice's lowest score at the tournament in the second round and ended with a 76-70-82--228 (+12).
Landon Michelson rounded out the squad with an 80-73-76--229 (+13), as the entire Owls squad finished within a four-stroke range. The junior tied for 56th place.
Host Houston claimed the team title with an 859 (-5), eight strokes up on second-place Oklahoma. Rice placed just three strokes behind 10th-place Washington State and only six behind ninth-place finisher Stephen F. Austin.
Central Arkansas' James Newton claimed the individual medal with a 209 (-5), two strokes ahead of the Cougars' Wesley McClain.
The Owls return to action on April 8-9 at the Old Waverly Intercollegiate in West Point, Miss.
