The Owls stormed into first place in the six-team field with 339 points. The university of Idaho is second (200 points), followed by host meet Houston (198), Tulane (151), New Mexico State (148) and North Texas (130).
Patton continued her impressive string of strong early early-season swims, and Thursday was her best yet. The sophomore transfer from Northwestern University broke the Rice record in winning the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.12. She then came back two events later and broke the school record in the 100-backstoke while swimming the lead leg of the 400-medley relay (54.98). Rice also won the 200-freestyle relay with a season-best time of 1:32.65. Junior Erin Flanigan won the 500-freestyle with a season-best 4:48.87. A Rice foursome of Taylor Armstrong, Rachel Moody, Casey Clark and Karina Wlostowska won the 400-medley with a season-best time of 3:44.15.
The meet continues at UH with morning prelims and evening finals through Saturday (Nov. 23). Rice head coach Seth Huston discussed the Owls' strong opening-day performance in the below video.
