It was Rice's first dual meet victory over SMU in women's swimming in the program's history (which dates back before the official start of women's athletics in the Southwest Conference). Rice head coach Seth Huston reviews the meet in the below video.
Rice won six of the meet's 14 swim events and had convincing 1-2 finishes in four of the races. SMU posted a total of ten wins, including two springboard diving events which Rice doesn't compete in, but the Owls stayed steady and kept the Mustangs close in the team scoring with a total of seven second place finishes. Clark led a 1-2-3 Rice finish in the 200-butterfly (2:02.94) and then came back and set the facility record to win the 100-freestyle (50.75) in a 1-2 with teammate Cora McKenzie. In the final stages of the meet Clark led a 1-2 with Marita Sailor in the 100-butterfly and sophomore Shelly Patton set a new facility record in a 1-2 with Quincy Christian in the 400-individual medley. The Owl foursome of Clark, Chelsea Fong, Sailor and McKenzie the came up big with win in the 400-freestyle relay by a near facility record time of 3:27.24.
The Rice swimmers are back in action Saturday, Nov. 2, with a home dual meet against Conference USA foe North Texas at noon. The Rice seniors will be honored during the meet in their final home appearance of their collegiate careers.
