KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - In the opening round of The Invitational at The Ocean Course, Rice University carded a 311 (+23) on Sunday to stand in 13th place with 36 holes remaining.
Sophomore James Lee jumped out to a strong start with birdies on the second and third holes and leads the Owls in 13th place overall with a 73 (+1). Lee also knocked in a birdie on the par-5 16th hole.
Landon Michelson followed with a 77 (+5), to tie in 39th place. The senior holed birdies on the par-4 12th and par-3 17th holes. Freshman Kevin Reilly finished the day just behind, with a 79 (+7) in 54th place. The rookie carded three birdies in the round.
Joe Beck III and Alex Levy each carded an 82 (+10) and are tied for 70th heading into Monday's second round. Beck's lone birdie of the round came on the par-3 fifth hole and Levy knocked in a pair of birdies on par-4 holes.
Competing as an individual, Tommy Economou shot a 78 (+5) to stand 48th in his first action of the fall.
Kentucky leads the field with a 288 (E), three strokes ahead of South Florida. Western Carolina's J.T. Poston leads the field with a 67 (-5), one stroke up on Notre Dame's Tyler Wingo.
Rice enters the second round just one stroke behind 12th-place Francis Marion and five strokes back from host College of Charleston in 11th place.
The Owls tee off on the 10th hole on Monday morning beginning at 7:50 a.m. ET.
