CHOUDRANT, La. - Jeff Wibawa fired an even par 72 and is tied for ninth after the opening round of the Argent Financial Classic being played at Squire Creek Country Club.
The Louisiana Tech-hosted tournament continues through Tuesday.
Wibawa began tournament play with a birdie at No. 1 and was two under heading to No. 9 before three straight bogeys. The sophomore would birdie No. 17 to get back to even par.
Rice is in ninth place in the team standings following a 310 (+22) on Sunday. Louisiana Tech shot an even-par 288 to take a four stroke lead in the team standings following the tournament's opening round. LSU and Middle Tennessee both shot 292s on Sunday and are tied for second.
Playing as an individual, LSU's Smylie Kaufman shot a seven-under 65 and has a three stroke lead in the individual standings. Middle Tennessee's Brad Simons shot a 68 while LSU's Sang Yi is in third place after shooting a 70.
Behind Wibawa, the Owls' best first-round score was a three-over par 75 turned in by James Hiester who is playing as an individual in the tournament.
On Monday, Rice will play with Jacksonville State and UTSA with tee times beginning at 8:40 a.m. Hiester will be in one of four groups of individuals who will begin teeing off from No. 1 at 8 a.m.
