HOUSTON - Rice's Julia Barrow and Lauren LaGrohave both been named to the Capital One Academic All-District VII Women's Soccer Teams, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), on Friday (Nov. 2).
To be eligible for NCAA Academic All-District honors student-athletes must hold at least a 3.3 grade point average and be a sophomore in academic and athletic standing. District VII is comprised of schools in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.
>Earlier in the week LaGro and Barrow earned first team All-Academic honors from Conference USA . Barrow had an outstanding semester in the classroom and on the soccer field where she has been a four-year starter in the midfield. The Hermosa Beach, Calif., native maintained a 3.92 GPA as an English major with a minor in poverty, justice and human capabilities. Barrow led the Owls with four assists and rarely came out of a game, playing all 90 or more minutes 13 times. As a First Team Academic All-District honoree, Barrow is now eligible to earn NCAA Academic All-America honors in women's soccer (which will be determined later this year).
A three-time C-USA All-Academic honoree who maintained a 3.87 GPA as a kinesiology major, LaGro started all 21 matches and helped the Owls to a share of the 2012 conference regular-season title. The Dallas native was also a second team all-conference honoree on the soccer field as a defender on the Owls' backline. LaGro often was assigned to cover the opposing team's top scoring threat. Overall the Rice backline helped hold opponents to just 11.7 shots per game.
LaGro was named to District VII's All-Academic second team. LaGro and Barrow served as the Owls' team captains this season. Rice soccer is 11-7-3 on the season under head coach Nicky Adams for the most wins the program has recorded in five years. The Blue & Gray is holding to the hopes of continuing the season with a possible at large bid to the NCAA Tournament beginning next week.
