
Wibawa Claims LA Match Play Title

Jeff Wibawa, who is entering his sophomore year at Rice, wrapped up his summer golf season by winning the City of Los Angeles 2011 Match Play Tournament.
Conducted by the City of Los Angeles' Department of Recreation and Parks, Wibawa qualified for match play by finishing eighth in stroke-play qualifying then won five matches on three different municipal courses over the past week.
Wibawa, a native of Encino, Calif., defeated Cal State Northridge golfer Matt Siporin (1 Up) in the championship round. A day prior to the championship, Wibawa won back-to-back matches. He defeated top seed and University of Kansas golfer Chris Gilbert (2 Up) in the quarterfinals then defeated Maxwell Cohen (2 & 1).
In the early rounds of match play, Wibawa defeated Jonathan Strang (6 & 4) and Austin Shuxiao (4 & 3).
Wibawa qualified for match play by carding a 68 in the qualifying round.
Wibawa was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team this past spring. He concluded his rookie season by finishing tied for 13th at the C-USA Championship. He had a 73.51 strokes per round average last year and posted three, Top 20 finishes.
Rice will begin its fall season Sept. 12-13 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss.
